Newspaper’s Future in the Browser(by @baekdal ).

we need AML, not HTML5.

The battle between native vs. HTML5 is going intensify a lot in 2011. As you can already see, there isn’t much difference between them. Especially not for the media industry.

I have long decided not create a native iPad app for baekdal.com, opting instead to create a web app. But, when I started creating it back in March, I realized that I didn’t even need a web app. A website, coupled with integration to RSS readers, Flipboard etc provided me with the same result.

For native apps to make sense, you need to have a pretty specific use-case in mind. Just trying to make newspapers look fancy won’t cut it. You can do that in HTML5.

On the other hand, HTML5 is also not the right tool for the job. The entire thing is designed to handle web pages, not web apps. Meaning that every HTML5 web app out there is one big workaround, trying to get around limitations of HTML.

The web app world seriously needs AML (Application Markup Language), not HTML5. We need a language that is designed to render as an app that can handle interface templates, asynchronous loading, threading etc.

Finding the perfect eBook Reader App for iPad (via @baekdal)

The iBook app takes quite a beating.

Amplify’d from feed.baekdal.com

The ebook market has just started, but already accounts for 9% of the total. The apps are good, but not perfect. What I really want is:

  • The openness of Stanza, allowing me to take any book, from any source, and read it on whatever reader I decide to use.
  • The buying experience of the iBook store, which is far superior to anything else out there.
  • The cloud based synching, auto-download, and availability of the Kindle, so that I no longer have to sync or redownload books on my other devices.
  • The availability of eReader, which offers more books that matches my taste in fiction (note: Amazon have the biggest selection overall, but lacks the niche content)
  • The readability and interface of Kobo, which are just more pleasing to the eye.

Social Interaction is Like Exercising – (by @baekdal)

Easily forgotten, but very important to remember.

Amplify’d from feed.baekdal.com

Most companies see social interaction as some kind of marketing, and design their presence around campaigns and events.

Social media return of investment is then the art of measuring the output of these campaigns against whatever costs a company had to put into it.

It all sounds very well, but that is not actually what social interaction is about. Social interaction is a way of life that establishes a healthier connection between your customers and yourself. Like exercising.

Exercising is a bit like breathing. If you don’t have any air in your lungs, you might really want to change that (I hope). So you pull in a big gasp of air, but then you find that it didn’t really change anything.

Life is not the result of having your lungs full of air, nor is it about the event of filling your lungs. Life is the result of breathing continually, in response to whatever needs your body has at the moment.

Social is not about reaching 5,000 fans and “get social” as the result. Just as you don’t “get fit.” Being social is a state of mind; It is not a project. It’s not about getting from A to B.

Social is about being part of the world around you. It is something you have to do continually. It never ends. You never reach your goal, because there is no goal to reach.

Setting the goal of reaching 5,000 likes on Facebook, is meaningless. When you reach it you will find that unless you keep being social, those 5,000 means absolutely nothing. You cannot stop being social just because you have many likes.

It’s not the result that matters, it is the motion.
